The New Testament letter we call I Peter was written to believers whose world was trying to take away their faith.  The Christians of Asia Minor were living under persecution but not always the aggressive kind.  Some of them had suffered physically for their faith, including a few who had been martyred for Jesus’ sake.  But most of them had to endure the same kinds of persecution we face today:  ridicule, scorn, and the loss of opportunities to get ahead.

Peter, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote these believers to encourage them to cling to the Living Hope they had received in Christ.  He implored them to live godly, upright lives in a world that was hell-bent and without hope.  Strangely, it was a world that looked a lot like ours.
